."* * * *Billy didn't realize that Sarah had followed him as he headed back to the office again. He turned, sensing another, and there she was."Billy." She eyed him accusingly."I thought Horace told you not to come back here.""I had to see him.I just had to see the man who's stolen my life.""That's not fair," Sarah told him."He didn't steal anything.""He's got my job, doesn't he?" They walked along the busy New York street, and he really fought against staring at that ring in the window. Those little diamonds glittering and the gold setting of the ring squeezing that chubby finger was something that often haunted him when he closed his eyes."It's against the rules.Horace will pop a cork if he finds out.""Let him." Billy put his arm around Sarah as they rode up in the elevator. She seemed better, less agitated today. But all that could change tomorrow."You shouldn't be here either, aiding and abetting," he teased."Don't forget, I can get away with it.I'm a teenager.I'm easily led."He laughed."I'll remember that.Have you talked to Dale?"She nodded."His heart is broken.I can't imagine what it must feel like… the person you love…" She shook her head."At least it wasn't personal in my case. Was it in yours?""No," he said."I was in the wrong place, that's all.""Did you see his face?" It came out like a whisper. He shook his head. They stepped off the elevator. He called out the names of those he knew."Hello, guys!""Why do you do that?" Sarah demanded."That irritates me.They can't hear you.""It makes me feel better," he said as they walked down the hall to his former office."If you saw him yesterday, why are you back here again today? How many times do you need to flagellate yourself?"He made a face at her.The door of the office was ajar.He peered in.It was empty."They didn't paint it yet, could have done it last night.Should have done it.Look at it.""Billy?""I didn't have much of a chance to get acquainted, that's all.Don't worry about it."She gave him a warning look."You're hanging on.It's not your office anymore.""I always hated this colour."Alex came around the corner now."Is that him?" Sarah whispered."Yeah.And you don't need to whisper.""He's hot.""Yeah, I know." He was just the kind of guy Billy would have gone apeshit over if he'd had the chance."Alex! Alex… ooooooooo boo!" Billy made a face at him as he went by.Sarah laughed."What was that for?"He smirked."I'm haunting him.""We can't do that, remember? Only a true mentalist or whatever you call them can hear us.That's why most ghost stories are crap.""What if we push his manuscript off the desk?""Billy," Sarah cautioned as they walked into the little office and moved around behind his chair, "we're not supposed to.""You are way too uptight.Just relax, I'm joking okay?" Billy looked up as Alex came walking into the office and sat down at his desk.Billy drew closer to the desk and glanced at the document Alex was editing."See, Sarah? It's the one I was working on before. It's about the Civil War, a really good story… Hey, what in hell is he doing there?""Billy!" Sarah tried to pull him away."He can't do that. And that was fine the way it was," he muttered, peering closer at the text.Alex paused for a moment. He cranked his neck, looked around."He senses something." Billy laughed."Good.Let him get the creeps." He focussed on the empty coffee cup and knocked it off the desk.It was saved from breaking by the carpeted floor.Alex jumped and looked down."Damn," he said.He leaned over and picked it up."Billy," Sarah said, looking frightened, "let's go now. That was wrong.""I don't care.I want to know what makes this guy tick.""He didn't do anything to you. Now, let's go." She tried to drag him out of the office."I loved that job." Billy jerked away from her."I loved my life." Billy knew the resentment didn't make sense. It wasn't this guy's fault, but he needed to vent.Alex seemed the best candidate. She hugged him."I know.I loved my life too, but it's over.Come on.Let's go people watch.""You go ahead.I'm going to stick around for a bit."* * * *Alex rubbed his eyes and shut down the screen. He sat back in his chair. He checked the clock on the wall.Billy assumed it was near quitting time.Alex stared at the cup on his desk for a moment.Billy laughed. He knew Alex was trying to figure out how in the hell that cup had fallen off.It hadn't been even close to the edge, and he hadn't hit it with his elbow.Alex looked tired.Billy knew that the boss was probably pressuring him to finish that edit.Alex stood up, collected his keys and cell phone, and placed them in the middle of the desk where he could grab them fast when he came back.Billy stared at the cell phone and keys.Nothing worse than misplacing such important things. When Alex walked back into his office, he reached for his belongings, only to discover they weren't there."Huh?" he said aloud."Where in hell are my keys? Where's my phone?" Suddenly, he heard the sound of his cell phone playing the theme song from Hawaii Five-O.Billy couldn't torment him too long.Alex looked around and saw the phone sitting on his chair, along with his keys."I didn't leave them there, did I?"No.You didn't.Who says I can't have some effect on the world? Ha!Alex flipped open his phone and answered. The response he received was only static. After all, Alex couldn't actually hear his voice, but Billy did speak. He said, "Fuck you."Alex grabbed his keys and left the office, locking it after him.His phone rang again in the parking garage. He answered and said, "Yeah? Did you call before? Oh, okay, nothing.Don't worry, I'm taking real good care of your car, buddy. It was no problem picking it up at the garage, and I have the bill. It's a whopper. Thanks for letting me have it for today Oh, about tonight, I guess but I might not stay until closing. If I take a siesta before, I'll be okay.I'll come round and pick you up." Alex unlocked the car door and got behind the wheel."We should get something to eat.And then to The Mill?"The Mill? That name echoed in his head. He'd gone there often. He was there the night that…Alex threw his cell phone on the seat and started the engine. The guy drove like a bat out of hell.If Billy had been among the living, he would have been clinging to the dashboard. One would expect the appropriate accompaniment would have been a heavy metal tune, but Alex had some sentimental hogwash from the eighties blaring out his CD player.Billy did a mental eye roll as he glanced at the CD.Greatest hits of Air Supply? You have got to be kidding! How gay can you get? He had to smile though when Alex sang right along to "I'm So Out of Love" at the top of his lungs. Not a bad singing voice, although he probably wouldn't be the next American Idol."So, you in a relationship?" Billy asked casually as if they'd just met.He didn't expect an answer, of course."What do you look like naked?" He laughed at his own private joke."You're pretty hot, actually." That was no lie.Well-muscled, nice thick black hair with that sexy shadow he'd always liked on a man."If I hadn't been severed and we'd met at the office, I would have had a serious hard-on for you.I wonder if you would have liked me [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
