.Axel knew it was just for him.“I guess I wasn’t that tired,” Ben said as he got a cloth from the bathroom.Axel stared as Ben wiped up the mess and tossed the cloth into the pile of laundry. It’d get everything damp, but Axel didn’t mention that.It wasn’t important. Then Ben cuddled next to him, fingers gripping Axel’s side and head pressed into his shoulder.A howl sounded outside, faint and lonely, and it pierced Axel’s chest. He knew the emotion behind that howl, though it seemed like a distant memory now.Ben held him tighter.“Do you think that was Gage or a different wolf?”Axel flicked his tongue over his lip ring.“I don’t know.”If it was Gage, Axel felt sorry for the bastard.* * *“Is this really the place?” Ben asked. His voice held a note of awe, and Axel couldn’t blame him.The Spanish style mansion was huge, the biggest house he’d ever seen up close.A tall plaster wall, dull yellow and crawling with ivy, surrounded it.A black wrought iron fence stood at the front.Overgrown bushes spilled out of the planters, heavy with flowers.Axel double-checked the address Gage gave him.It didn’t seem like the kind of house that wolf could afford. Was his pack rich?“Yeah.Looks like.Maybe he’s squatting here.”It sat on a hill over the ocean with the rest of Santa Cruz sprawled below it.The colorful little bungalows looked like tiny shacks compared to this place.Axel frowned at his jeans and white T-shirt.He didn’t belong here.At least Ben looked the part in his thrifted designer clothes, a well-fitted button up shirt and pants that hugged his ass perfectly. He always fit in in places like this.Axel didn’t.Ben pushed on the fence, and it swung open, creaking.Their footsteps sounded hollow over the leaf littered path up to the house. It wasn’t particularly tall, only two stories, but it wrapped around the central courtyard into a giant ‘U.’ An empty fountain sat in the center of the courtyard, rocks and pennies littering the bottom. The dark red roof looked stark against the overcast sky, like blood on the sand.“Do you think we should’ve brought something?” Ben asked as he fingered a bright, tropical flower.“Like what? This isn’t a potluck,” Axel said, frowning at the house. When Axel called, Gage asked him to come over for breakfast. He hadn’t said anything about living in a damn mansion.Ben squeezed the coffee cup in his hands and shrugged.“Still.We’re guests. You know how my mom is,” he said with a smile.Axel knew.Mrs.Singer always had food and the time to prepare it, even though she worked full time as a nurse.“I guess we could’ve gotten donuts.”Ben nudged his shoulder, and Axel grabbed his mate by the hand. The whole place reeked of disuse, and Axel gripped the omega, just in case this was some kind of ambush. Then he knocked at the faded blue door, the paint peeling under his knuckles. It reverberated through the house as if it found nothing but ghosts. After a long moment, Ben looked up at him, and Axel shrugged. He knocked again. If someone didn’t answer this time, they’d leave.Just as he was about to turn, the door swung open.Gage stood there. His hazel eyes, lined with dark circles, softened.Axel caught the hint of blood on the air and glanced down.Gage’s left foot was bandaged and spotted with blood.“Welcome to Casa de Armonía,” he said and rolled his eyes. The scent of cooking filled the house, and Ben stepped in first. His footsteps kicked up dust.Axel followed.Gage limped in front, leading them to an oversized kitchen with more appliances than Axel thought necessary.Something sizzled on the stove, and Gage stirred it.He smiled, though it looked strained.“You can sit.I’m making breakfast.Have you eaten yet?”Ben nodded and perched at the counter.“Yeah, but I can eat again. What’re you making?“Huevos Rancheros,” Gage said, dipping his finger into the sauce and licking it.Dust coated the floor, though it was smudged in some places.White sheets covered most of the furniture.People only did that if they weren’t going to be home for a long time.“Whose house is this?” Axel asked.“Don’t think I live here?” Gage smirked.“No,” Axel said, tensing his jaw.Gage shrugged.“You’re right, esé.I haven’t lived here in a long time. This was my pack’s home back in the day.Now it belongs to Q.He’ll be down in a minute. He just had to brush his hair or some shit like that.”Ben’s blue eyes brightened.“Q? Are there only two of you in the pack?”Gage’s muscles tensed. He wore the same outfit he had the day before, a wife-beater and jeans. It showed off his powerful arms and toned chest. He looked more muscular than Axel himself, who was built like a swimmer – strong and lanky.“Yeah, it’s just the two of us.That’s why we need your help.”Ben glanced at Axel, and he knew what his mate was thinking with that look.Did they really want to get in the middle of a territory dispute? A dispute they didn’t have to be a part of?A light step on the stairs caught his attention, and Axel glanced down the hallway.A man stepped around the corner. He was the same height as Gage, but his black hair hung around his face like a curtain. It fell just past his shoulders, and he wore long sleeves even though the day was warm. His finely fitted shirt was buttoned up to the top.It looked like something Ben would wear.Ben gaped.“Is that DKNY? Fall 2012.I heard they sold out in a month.Oh, and your shoes – Bacco Bucci, right? I always wanted a pair.Italian leather is the best.”The new wolf nodded slowly, and Axel bit back a sigh. This made Ben happy, even if he didn’t understand half of what his mate said.Or what was so special about Italian leather.Gage seemed to have the same opinion. He poured the eggs into a pan and laughed.“Guess where I got my clothes? It starts with a ‘K’ and ends with ‘Mart.’ It looks like you have a fan, Q.”“Quinton Santos,” the new wolf said, nodding at them both. His eyes were so dark they were almost black. After they completed the introductions, Quinton sat at the table, his back straight and stiff.Ben sat next to him, grinning like he did when they were kids and a new issue of Robin was about to come out.“You’ll have to come by my boutique one of these days.We have a large menswear section with local designers from all over the West Coast. We have a great collection. Is that a Chopard?”Quinton turned the silver strap on his wrist.“Yeah.It was my brothers.”Axel could tell how badly Ben wanted to touch the damn thing.Probably try it on too, but he didn’t ask.At least he’d learned something in the last few years.“Is he always like this?” Gage asked as he piled the food onto a large serving plate.“Yeah,” Axel said, the hair on the back of his neck bristling. The tone of Gage’s voice brought up memories of Cross senior and other members of their pack, criticizing Ben for his hobbies.Hell, Axel did the same thing. He wasn’t proud of it now, but at the time he didn’t know what else to do.“He likes that sort of thing.”Gage shrugged and slumped at the table. He didn’t set it beyond putting the plates within reach, and Quinton glared at him. Then Gage filled his plate and sneered at Quinton.Axel had a feeling Gage knew what he was doing, and he was doing it on purpose. He frowned.Quinton dished up his own plate and put a folded napkin on his lap.He ate slowly, and Axel wondered how his hair didn’t get in his mouth since it hung around his face.“Is it just the two of you?” Quinton asked finally, dabbing his mouth.Ben nodded.“We left our old pack in Pittsburgh for a fresh start out west
